NEW NOISE: MIA GLADSTONE

The New York newcomer set to take over.

Fresh off of dropping her latest track “Revolutionize” yesterday, Mia Gladstone is well on her way to claiming her place among the musical greats. Based in NYC, the young artist is establishing herself as a unique voice in the music scene, combining elements of jazz, soul, hip-hop and pop into her songwriting and completely self-producing all of her tracks.

Latest cut “Revolutionize” is the perfect example of her skills. Full of chilled vibes and showcasing Mia’s gorgeous jazz-tinged vocals, it’s an intriguing glimpse at what she’s got in store for her debut EP later this year.

Eager to find out more, we caught up with Mia to get the 411 on your new fave artist.

Hey Mia, how are you? What have you been up to this week?

I’m doing good ! This week has been really hectic, I’ve been getting all this shit together for a video I’m shooting on Thursday, rehearsing for a show on Friday and recording a lot! It’s a good kind of busy but stressful…

So back to the beginning – when did you first fall in love with music?

I can’t remember a time when I wasn’t in love with music. It has always occupied my world!

What was the moment that you realised you wanted to make your own?

I’ve been making my own music forever! I really wanted to learn piano when I was little so I could accompany myself. I actually wrote my first song when I was in 2nd grade for a school talent show and I quickly became addicted to music creation after that.

Where do you draw the most inspiration from?

Everyday life, emotions, feelings, people, colors, everything. Really anything that draws a reaction from me can inspire my music.

How would you describe the music you make?

It’s very all over the place. I never go for a specific sound or style when I create so the vibe is always different. A lot of it is very chill, shit you can smoke to.

Songwriting wise – what do you find yourself writing about the most?

It depends on where I’m at mentally… a lot the time I just write about life. Love is also a constant topic, but not necessarily in a romantic sense. We are all love and connected by it so I like to write about that sentiment.

“I want to inspire love and acceptance of the self and the world!”

You produce your own tracks as well – what inspired this decision?

I started fucking around with producing on Mixcraft with loops when I was a little kid and then actually started getting into producing in high school. I had worked with a handful of producers and I really appreciated what they did but it was frustrating waiting on other people to help with songs so I decided to do it myself! I still love collaborating with producers. Being able to produce yourself just helps a lot.

You’re getting ready to release your debut EP! What can you tell us about it?

Yes! Im so excited! I made this project over the course of a month with The Kickdrums out of a little space in Brooklyn just after I got back from a very transformative five weeks in southern Ohio. It was super isolating but for the better and gave me a new perspective. The entire EP was fuelled by the state of love I was in. It’s probably the best music I’ve ever made!

What do you want people to take away from the record after hearing it?

I hope it’ll bring people to the place I was at mentally when I made it. I want to inspire love and acceptance of the self and the world!

Is there a particular track that you’re super excited for people to hear?

So excited for people to hear “Revolutionize”! It pretty much sums up the project and my overall mindset.

As a young female musician, what would be your advice to other young women looking to break into the (often male-dominated) music industry?

Trust yourself and know your worth! “Experienced industry people” love to talk down to young women just starting out. Know that the industry is changing and you are the future, therefore you can do whatever you want!

Aside from the EP, what else can we expect from you this year?

So much music! I have a ton of music I’ve made since the EP that I’m very excited to put out. Also a number of features with me will be coming out this year, super pumped for all of those.
